The 7 R's to define Ego
Though quite popular as a joke, I came to
learn about it just today, during an indefinite and silly argument with a dear friend.
“…You have an impermeable ego….” was my conclusion. This is when I was
introduced to the statement, ‘ego is just like underwear… not to be flaunted…..
it should be there in everyone but not to be visible from outside…..’ While the
debate stopped momentarily, my mind started a queer comparison between the two,
one a tangible product and the other elusive and yet omnipresent. Following are the points that I thought are
possible areas of convergence between the two….
REFUGE
Just like underwear, ego also provides comfort, protection, security, support, and shape (to the personality).
RIGHT FIT
If undersized, the person carrying it suffers and stifles, if over sized, it gets displayed soon. Both ways, an ill fit surely causes discomfort and is harmful. The right 'fit'... comes with hit and trial and regular self checking and evaluation. Feedback is thus important.
ROUTINE
Wear and tear is inevitable. So....'handle with care' is necessary..... specialized treatment needed during the clean(s) ing ritual.....cannot be mixed up with the others that required washing. But regular 'cleansing' is non negotiable...... otherwise...'it' rebels…..
RITUAL
Kids are gradually introduced to this... in a phased manner.....they hate it initially...distaste it...but finally get used to it.
RIGHTFULLY needed
The gender needs are also very different and specialized.
RARELY THOUGH
But finally, as correctly observed, it should not be visible..... but what happens.... if it becomes visible? Will cause embarrassment and/or make one look like the "Superman"??
And, finally, here comes the only point of divergence that I could think of.

RATHER NOT
The quality of underwear comes with a
cost....which many cannot afford….. but most of the people living in the third world manage well without one, (let alone a high
quality product), for the entire lifetime….which means that our survival or life
does not derive meaning from possessing an underwear or otherwise….Whereas, in case of
Ego, if used as a ‘tool’, may lead to resurgence. But if used as a 'weapon', will surely lead to
gradual reliction from the meaningful others…...
What a brilliant analogy!!! loved it!!!
