The Sound of Lyrics

Singing has always been therapeutic for me.  An unsolved math sum, a lost game of kabaddi, an upturned tiffinbox in school, ….. to an internal audit, an un-impressing job interview, an ‘I-am-always-right’ boss in office….. to a burnt dish, a heap of unwashed clothes, a stubborn child and a family feud……I just try to sing through all uphill tasks and gain momentum in living….My son has a different take on my singing skills though....

Yesterday evening I tried out a Farida Khanum gazal at an august gathering at a friends’ house.  The sky had just turned dark and the impending showers provided the perfect setting for the piping hot pancakes served by the lady of the house.  This is a place where your taste buds are adequately satisfied but in lieu of a song.  Singing was mandatory.

This song, I had picked up from a senior during my Delhi School days. “Aaj Jane ki Zidd Na Karo…Haye Mar jayenge  Hum toh loot jayenge… Aisi Baatein kiya na karo…”written by Fayyaz Hashmi.

Yesterday, I sung it after a decade or more.  Bereft of regular riyaz, my notes were faltering unapologetically but the lyrics did not fail to command attention. So much so that as soon as I ended the piece, my eight year old son asked with pure innocence sparkling in his voice and eyes, "Mummy….Aaj ghar jaane ki Zid Kyon na Karein? Kal school nahi jaana hai?" That would have been proved more therapeutic for him....:)

  1. haha!!! a blogger with a wit!!! wonderful!! reminds me of the time when I mother did riyaz and I would say - "can you stop singing Ma..I get distracted and cant concentrate on my studies" and as luck might have it, now my daughter sometimes says, "Ma can I listen to western music, instead of you singing?" :-).. although once her friends appreciate my singing she comes and hugs me, saying "Ma really my friends think you sing well too" - bonuses!!!! keep writing and I will keep reading

    1. Janish, amar meye has been showing keen interest in learning vocal classical and Kathak. She is getting trained for both, since the past one year. Started quite late. Ekhane kachha kachhi te bhalo teachers pawa jaaye na. Onek classes chole, kintu jemon ta ami chhai, with focus only on learning and not on stage shows and perfomances, temon ta pawa jaye na.
